يوسف البستاني: أديبٌ وبائعُ كُتبٍ لبناني.
وُلد «البستاني» في لبنان في عامِ ١٨٩٢م، وبعد ذلك ارتحل إلى مصر، حيث عَمِل بائعًا متجولًا للكُتبِ في القاهرةِ وأنشأ مكتبتَه المعروفةَ بمنطقة «الفجالة»، ومن خلالِها نَشر مؤلَّفاتِ كبارِ الأدباءِ الشوام، مثل: «جبران خليل جبران» و«أمين الريحاني» و«أحمد فارس الشدياق» وغيرِهم، كذلك اشتَغلَ بتجارةِ المخطوطاتِ القديمةِ والنادرة؛ فكان مَعروفًا لدى مكتباتِ أوروبا وأمريكا، وعَمِل في نهايةِ حياتِه على تكوينِ نقابةٍ تَضمُّ المُشتغِلين بتجارةِ الكُتب.
للبستاني عدةُ مُؤلَّفاتٍ أدبيةٍ وتاريخيةٍ قَيِّمة، نَذكرُ منها: «تاريخ حرب البلقان الأولى»، و«النسر الأعظم»، و«أمثال الشرق والغرب».
تُوفِّي البستاني في عامِ ١٩٢٥م.

لا تخلو أيُّ ثقافة إنسانية من وجود الأمثال والمأثورات الشعبية التي تلخِّص حكمتها وتعكس جزءًا من فلسفتها وذاكرتها الجمعية، فتظهر فيها التقاليد والموروثات، حيث تعبِّر الشعوب عن مشاعرها تجاه ما يحيط بها من أحداث، وتنقُلُ تجربتها للأجيال القادمة في كلمات قليلة وعبارات مقتضبة. وبلغ من أهمية هذه الأمثال أن درسها علماء الأنثربولوجي والتاريخ ليسدُّوا النقص في معلوماتهم التاريخية عن بعض الفترات، ويقفوا على أحوال المجموعات البشرية. والكتاب الذي بين يديك جمع فيه المؤلف أمثالًا وحِكَمًا عربية وأخرى غربية في موضوعات شتى كان هدفها الدعوة للفضائل، وإذكاء الحماسة والطموح، والتحلي بالشمائل الطيبة، وكذلك الحض على العلم والسعي في اكتساب الرزق، والتنفير من سوء الأخلاق والعادات السيئة، وذلك على لسان أهل الفضل والعلم من علماء وحكماء وأدباء كبار.
