تُعنى هذه الدراسة بإشكالية الأصالة والتغريب في الرواية منطلقة من أن الرواية نوع أدبي، والأدب نتاج المجتمع في كل مجالاته، فهو أسمى استخدام للغة في المجتمع. واللغة ظاهرة اجتماعية، ولما كانت هي أداة الأدب فإن الأدب يصبح أيضاً ظاهرة اجتماعية. وثمة علاقة وثيقة بين النوع الأدبي والمجتمع، فهو في ولادته وتطوره وانقراضه يرتبط بالمجتمع الذي يوجد فيه. ويرد على الحاجات الجمالية لهذا المجتمع ويكتسب شكله من خلال علاقة وثيقة ببناه الثقافية والاقتصادية والتاريخية، ويتوجه الخطاب إلى متلق أنتجته هذه البنى مجتمعة.
ولما كانت الرواية نوعاً أدبياً فإن دراستها يمكن أن تقوم على محاولة إظهار العلاقة بين بنية الشكل الروائي ومراحل تطور البنى الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، والسياسية والثقافية في المجتمع الذي أنتجته الرواية. والحقيقة أنه لا يمكن تحليل التحولات الكبرى في الآداب العالمية، وفهمها وتفسيرها في معزل عن التحليل الفكري للعوامل الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية والثقافية.
