هذه الرواية محاولة أولية لإلقاء الضوء على حقبة مهمة من مسار تكوين الجالية العربية في مدينة ديربورن وولاية ميشيغن. وتتوسل مقاربة تجربة أكبر تجمع سكاني عربي خارج الشرق الأسط، بأسلوب أدبي (يعفيها من متطلبات الدراسة الأكاديمية وضوابطها المنهجية الصارمة). هي جزء من حكاية تحول الآلاف من العائلات العربية المهاجرة من كثير من الدول العربية إلى مجتمع متكامل، والآليات الداخلية والمؤثرات الخارجية، خصوصاً تأثير الأوضاع والتطورات في الوطن الأم على تطور أحوال الجالية.
قصة العرب الأميركيين جديرة بالطبع بدراسات ومقاربات أكاديمية تفيها حقها، حيث شكّل وجودهم علامة فارقة في المجتمع الأميركي، لكن ذلك يتطلب موارد وطاقات ومواهب تلقت صفعة هائلة بعد الحادي عشر من أيلول 2001، حين تبدد الكثير من المكاسب التي تحققت، وانكفأت الجالية على نفسها لتصير أقل تفاعلًا مع محيطها الأميركي وأكثر ارتباطًا بالواقع المأساوي للوطن الأم.
