تمسك الزوج المحطم بالحياة.. فلم يمت.. وتراءى أن الأشلاء الممزقة قد تجمعت ثانية في جسد متماسك. ولبث الطبيب يعالجه ويشرف عليه، حتى إذا مرت سنتان جهر برأيه وقراره وأعلن للجميع أن الخطر زال ولكن الجسد شل قسمه الأسفل.
هكذا قوضت الحرب دعائم بيت كونستنس فسقط على رأسها، وأيقنت بعد أن جرفها تيار المصائب أن على المرء أن يحيا وأن يتعلم..
كيف عاشت.. وماذا تعلمت هذه الزوجة الشابة!؟ تصور رواية ""عشيق الليدى تشاترلى"" علاقة حب جنسى بين حواجز الطبقة والزواج، العشيق حارس عند زوج العشيقة، أى أنه بتعبير لورانس – كما يوضح المترجم – على لسان السير كلفورد تشاترلى زوج الليدى تشاترلى ينتمى للطبقة الخادمة، والعشيقة تنتمى للطبقة الحاكمة.تعكس رواية ""عشيق الليدى تشاترلى"" إيمانه بأن على الرجال والنساء التغلب على القيود المميتة للمجتمع الصناعى وإتباع الغرائز الطبيعية التى تقودهم إلى الحب العاطفى، وحظيت الرواية بشهرتها نتيجة وصفها الصريح للعلاقة الجنسية، وما يبقى قويًا جدًا واستثنائيًا جدًا بشأن هذه الرواية ليس فقط صدقها فى تصوير العلاقة الجنسية بين الرجل والمرأة – بحسب المترجم – بل فى حقيقة أنها مازالت واحدة من أهم الروايات القليلة فى تاريخ الأدب الإنجليزى التى تعالج الرغبة الجنسية للمرأة، وتصور تجربة المرأة ومتعتها فى علاقة جنسية مرضية، وخيبة أملها فى علاقة جنسية غير مرضية."
