لضائعة نُشِرَت رواية «الضائعة» للمرة الأولى في إنكلترا عام 1920؛ في شهر أيلول وِفقاً إلى إفادة ناشر لورانس، وفي شهر تشرين ثاني وِفقاً لواضع بيان مؤلفاته. غير أنه كان قد باشر العمل فيها قبل ذلك بثماني سنوات، والمسوَّدة الأولى للجزء غير النهائي من الكتاب كُتِبَ ما بين عامَيّ 1912 – 1913، مع المسوَّدة الأولى من رواية «قوس قُزَح». وطبعاً أعادَ كِتابتها بالكامل في عام 1920. تقول «الضائعة»، «لن يتمكنوا من المغادرة إلى إيطاليا إلاّ في أوائل شهر تشرين ثاني»، وفي شهر تشرين ثاني من عام 1919 غادرَ لورانس إنكلترا، في حركة نفي ذاتي وهو حزين. وخلال الحرب، وبسبب خِلاف بيروقراطي، طُرِدَ من كورنوال بتهمة الاشتباه بالتجسس – وشعر بحسرة ساخطة. فعندما تنظر ألفينا وهي في القارب في القنال خلفها إلى «الجروف الرمادية بلون الرماد، بلون الجثث» تشاهد بلدها للمرة الأخيرة كـ «تابوت طويل رمادي يغرقُ ببطء»، والقلب الذي انفطرَ بحبٍ وجحودٍ غاضبَين كان قلب لورانس. هو، «الرجل الضئيل الأشدّ إنكليزيّة»، اتَّهمه أهل بلده بالجاسوسية. ولم يستطع أبداً أنْ يغفر لهم هذا. ولِمَ يغفر؟ «يا لهم من حمقى!». ريتشارد ألدينغتُن
