هذه الرواية إدانة للاتجاه المادي في هذا العصر. والمحكمة البريطانية التي أمرت بمصادرتها عادت وسمحت بها ووصفتها بأنها رواية تعلمنا الأخلاق الإنسانية الحقيقية التي تنقذنا من الانهيار والدمار. وقد نقلت إلى العربية من أحدث الطبعات الإنكليزية نقلاً أميناً.
قال الروائي الإنكليزي فورستر: "إن د.هـ لورانس هو أعظم روائي في القرن العشرين". وقال عن روايته إنها تدلنا على "طريق الخلاص".
