"في ميدان أوروبي متسع كان يقف مدهوشًا أمام التماثيل التي تشبه أصدقاءه إلى حدّ بعيد. كانت التماثيل تبتسم له وتسأله عن سرّ عدم نزوله إلى وسط البلد في الفترة الأخيرة، وعن غيابه الذي طال عن شقة «الفرنساوي»، وعن أجندته الرمادية التي كان يهرب منهم إليها، في حين على الأرض إلى جوار التماثيل حَمَامات حطَّت قديمًا، وحوَّلَها الشتاء والغربة إلى طيور من جبس.
أمسك بحمامة منهُنّ وقذف بها في وجه تمثال صديقه المبتسم، فطارت من يده، وتابعها بنظره حتى حطَّت فوق مقام سليمان باشا الفرنساوي، تحديدًا فوق سوره الحديد الدائري، وأخذت تنوح:
«كان يسكن هنا بجوار هذا القبر وقريبًا من كل الموتَى».
