وعلى الرغم من أن زبائن الحانة يشكلون قوامها وتكوينها ومزاجها، فحقيقة الحانة وروحها في "البواب"، سنوات طويلة مرت لا يتذكرها بواب الحانة نفسه، لكنه يتذكر أنه كان أزهرياً حافظاً للقرآن وصاحب صوت جميل وعلّامة في الفقه على المذاهب الخمسة؛ الأربعة المشهورة وخامسها الفقه الجعفري، الذي أجازه الأزهر كفقه معتبر يجوز التعبد به إلى جوار فقه أئمة السنة الأربعة.
كان مثار إعجاب الجميع، شاب يافع نحيل يحفظ آلاف الأبيات من الشعر، يخلو ليلاً ليغني فيجد الطلبة في "الأزهر" يستمعون إليه في حلقات.. إختار الصوفية وارتاح لها أكثرمن مذاهب أولئك المتشددين قليلي الإبتسام، وظل على طريقه وطريقته وملازمته لـ "شيخه"، منعزلاً قدر الإمكان عن الدنيا عدا صوت "أم كلثوم" ولعب الشطرنج ومشاهدة الأفلام، كان فريداً بين المريدين.
