حظي الشعر في الحضارات الإنسانية ببالغ الاهتمام، ولا شك في أن مبعث هذا الاهتمام، هو ما يثيره الشعر في المتلقي من إحساس جمالي، وتناغم روحي، وما يبعثه من صحوة في الفكر والخيال، وتفتح على العالم الظاهر والخفي. إن هذا الباعث بقدر ما هو إيقاظ لوجد الروح، هو في الوقت نفسه، تحريك للفكر لاستجلاء خبايا هذه الظاهرة المسماة: الشعر، هذه الوسيلة اللغوية الأولى، التي استعملها الإنسان في التعبير الجمالي عن تأملاته الكونية منذ فجر التاريخ.
ويكفي، دليلا على هذا الاهتمام، أن نشير إلى ما لقيه الشعر من عناية في اثنين من أكبر الآداب العالمية، وهما الأدب اليوناني والأدب العربـي، فقد انصب الاهتمام فيهما على الشعر انصبابا كبيرا، فكل النقد العربـي كان نقدا للشعر إلا ما ندر وكانت -بالتالي- كل الآراء والتصورات المستنتجة من خلال هذا النقد قائمة على الشعر دون غيره. وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة للأدب اليوناني والروماني. وهذا الاهتمام يفسر مدى تعلق الإنسان بالشعر؛ إذ إنه يجد فيه إشباعا لحاجاته الروحية والمعرفية والفكرية والجمالية. وقد دفعه هذا الاهتمام إلى التأمل في طبيعة الشعر ووظيفته وتكونه، وعلاقته بنفسه وبالناس والعالم، فأنتج من الدراسات في هذا المجال ما لا يمكن حصره، إلى درجة بلغ فيها حد الأزمة، لأن هذه الدراسات بقدر ما تكشف عن أسرار الشعر، بقدر ما تحير الفكر والعقل وتعطل وصولهما إلى تكوين مفهوم واضح حوله.
