هذا كتاب لطيف في بابِه، فريد في موضوعه وأبوابِه، حاولْتُ أنْ أجمَع فيه ما وقع لي أثناء القراءة والمُطالَعة مِن تلك النماذج المُشْرِقة، والأخبار المُضِيئة، مِنْ صَبْر الأوائل والأسلاف على عظيم المِحَن، وشديد الفِتَن، في الاعتصام بالله عن الشهوات، والتحامِي عن بالِغِ النَّزَوات، والتغاضِي عن الحرام، والتنكُّب عن عادات الفُسَّاق واللئام، هذا مع تَهيُّأ الأسباب، وانْغِلاق الأبواب، وحُضور النَّشْوَة، واشتعال الشهْوَة، وظُهور بَوَارِق الَّلذَّة ومع اتحاد هؤلاء جميعًا (مِن الأوائل والأسلاف) في التنكُّب عن مسالِك الشيطان، واتفاقهم في الابتعاد عن المَزالِق المُوَصِّلة إلى أَتُون تلك النيران؛ إلا أن دوافَعهم في ذلك قد اختلفَتْ، وبواعِثَهم على تَرْكِ تلك الرذيلة قد تعدَّدَتْ وتباينت
