خلال العقد الأخير من القرن العشرين غدا المواطنية عنواناً مثيراً للاهتمام البالغ على مستوى العالم في ثلاثة ميادين: الميدان السياسي-الاجتماعي والأكاديمي والتعليمي. وقد ولد هذا الاهتمام كتابات ومؤلفات ضخمة، إلا أنه لم يصدر على ما أعلم، كتاب واحد يستعرض التاريخ الكامل للمبادئ والممارسات الخاصة بالمواطنية خلال مسارها التاريخي الكامل. ومع ذلك، فلا يمكن فهم الظروف الحالية المحيطة بها والمناظرات حولها من دون معرفة الخلفية التاريخية لها، وبالفعل فإن العديد من المؤلفات التي كتبت بشأنها تعلل موضوعاتها من خلال التلميح إلى نظريات وممارسات ماضية.
