يقول ستيفان زفايج في كتابه " بناة العالم " فم تكن طبيعة تولستوي تطيق غموضا ولا شيئا ضبابيا او شيئا تخشاه الظلال لا في داخل العالم الارضي ولا خارجه وهذا ما سنلمحه في روايته " القوزاق " التي تعكس شفافية ووضوحا حميميا مصدرهما ذكريات الكاتب نفسه فبإمكاننا ان نعتبر رواية القوزاق امتدادا او جزءا من مذكراته الشخصية فالبطل الذي يقدمه تولستوي في الرواية . الا وهو اولينين هو صورة من ملحمة انسانية اسمها تولستوي .. حين وصل تولستوي الى القوقاز سنة 1851 شعّر أول الأمر بخيبة الأمل ... لكن سرعان ما أعجبته حياة قوزاق نهر تيريك
هذه الحياة البدائية التي تحتل فيها الأهواء مكاناً كبيراً, والتي نرى الحب فيها يترقب الموت ، هي عند تولستوي نغمة أساسية ، يقرر تولستوي أن يكتب شيئاً عن القوزاق. ولكن الغريب أن الكاتب سيظل يجرب ويتلمس طريقه مدة طويلة. حتى لقد احتاج إلى عشر سنين ليفرغ من كتابة قصة صاغها اثنتي عشرة صياغة مختلفة . حتى ان الصياغة الأولى - ويرجع عهدها إلى شهر سبتمبر من سنه 1852 قد نظمها تولستوي شعرا
لقد كتب تولستوي : " أخذت أحب القوقاز حباً متأخراً لكنه قوي جداً، حقاً ما أجمل تلك البلاد المتوحشة التي يتحالف فيها تحالفاً غريباً ، طافحاً بالشعر ، أمران متعارضان أشد التعارض : الحرب و الحرية ...
