يخلق تولستوي في قصة "سيباستوبول في شهر كانون الأول" الشخصية الجماعية للبحارة والجنود وقادة الوحدات، وأهالي المدينة المدافعين عنها ببسالة في وجه ضغط قوى العدو المتفوقة، وما تزال هذه القصة تعتبر حتى اليوم ريبورتاجاً حربياً عن المدينة البطلة التي صمدت لحصار العدو أحد عشر شهراً.
وقصة "سيباستوبول في آيار" مكتوبة بلهجة أخرى، وفيها إدانة قاسية للضباط إلى الأرستقراطيين الذين كان تحركهم إلى سيباستوبول ذا دوافع نفعية، ساعين إلى "إقتناص الصلبان والروبلات" أي الحصول على النباشين والمال.
لقد اضطرت القوات الروسية إلى التخلي عن سيباستوبول، وكان ذلك فاجعة للمدافعين عنها، وقد صور تولستوي في قصة "سيباستوبول في آب 1855" بأية مرارة وألم غادرها المدافعون عنها، وكيف كانوا واثقين من أن العدو لن يستمر طويلاً في الإستحواذ عليها!.
وتعتبر قصة "القوزاق" في تاريخ حياته وأعماله الحد الفاصل وبمثابة الإنتقال من عهد إلى عهدن فقد انتهت فترة كاملة من التقصي والبحث المجهدين والمثمرين إلى أقصى حد، ودخل، بعد أن جمع تجربة غاية في الغنى، في مرحلة الإبداع الناضج تماماً والتي كانت حصيلتها العملان الملحميان "الحرب والسلم" و "أنا كارينينا".
