يجب النظر إلى مكيافيلي كما كان حقًا. ومن ثم: هل يمكن لمكيافيلي، الذي يدلي بالملاحظات التالية، أن يكون مكيافيليًا كما نفهم المصطلح المهين؟
1. لذا، فمن أجل معرفة طبيعة الشعب، يجب أن يكون المرء أميرًا؛ لمعرفة طبيعة الأمير، يجب أن يكون المرء من الشعب.
2. إذا لم يكن الأمير مستسلمًا للرذائل التي تجعله مكروهًا، فمن غير المعتاد أن يُظهر رعيته عاطفتهم تجاهه.
3. صنعت الفرصة موسى وكورش ورومولوس وثيسيوس وآخرين؛ و سيطرت فضيلتهم على الفرصة، مما جعل أوطانهم نبيلة وسعيدة. فالأنبياء المسلحون ينتصرون؛ والعُزّل يخسرون.
4. بدون الإيمان والدين، يحقق الإنسان القوة ولكن ليس المجد.
5. يريد المواطنون البارزون أن يأمروا ويقمعوا؛ يريد العامة فقط أن يتحرروا من الظلم.
6. يحتاج الأمير إلى شعب ودود؛ وإلا فلا أمل في التنوع.
٧. الأمير الذي يحكم بشجاعة يتجنب الكوارث.
٨. الأمم القائمة على قوات المرتزقة لن تنعم بالسلام والاستقرار.
٩. المرتزقة خطرون بسبب جبنهم
١٠. هناك طريقتان للقتال: إحداهما بالقوانين، والأخرى بالقوة. الأولى طريق الإنسان الصحيح، والثانية طريق الوحوش.
