من العجيب أن يهتم ماكيافيلي بذلك وهو الذي قضى أيام شبابه وكهولته في خدمة أهل وطنه والسعي في تأسيس بناء العدل ليعيشوا في ظله، وقد جلب عليه تطرفه فقدان منصبه في جمهورية فلورنسا، فهل يعدل في حكمه من يتهم مثل هذا الرجل بمساعدة أهل البغي والطغيان في مفاسدهم؟، إنما كتب ماكيافيلي ما كتب ليدل الناس على مواطن الغدر ليفطنوا إلى صنوف الخداع فيما يدبر ضدهم وما يدس لهم من الدسائس، ولو أن الناس قدروا له حق قدره وأعاروا آراءه أفئدة واعية ما تكمن أحد من إيذائهم، فمن الغبن والأمر ما ذكرت أن يعود اللائمون باللائمة على ماكيافيلي لأن كلامه ذهب صرخة في واد ونفخة في رماد، والعاقل لا يرى عتبًا على قاتل إذا ذهب قوله في الرياح، ولعل من لا يزالون يبغضون ماكيافيلي مقلدين في ذلك ألد أعدائه وأشد خصومه يرجعون إلى رسائله ومكاتيبه الخاصة التي لا تزال محفوظة بخطه في خزائن الكتب العامة بفلورنسا ورومه ليثبتوا صدق ما دونت من الحقائق.
وقد آن للقارئ أن يبدأ بمطالعة الكتاب بذاته ليستطيع الحكم عليه حكمًا مستقلًا شخصيًا وخشية ان تصعب معرفة الأشخاص الأماكن التي ورد ذكرها في الكتاب لكثرتها فقد رتبنا لها في آخره فهرستًا على حروف المعجم مع تبينها بيانًا وجيزًا كافيًا، وقدمنا على الكتاب فصلًا عن تقديرنا فضله منذ وقفنا على كتابه وقصة خيالية عن وفاته وصف حياته وكانت كتابتها بفيرنزه عقيب زيارة منزله.
