مؤلف مسرحية "الماندراغولا" هو نيكولا مكيافيلّي الذي اشتهر في العالم كلّه بكتاب "الأمير"، جليس حكّام العالم منذ قديم الزمان، ودستور الكثرين منهم، بل ومن غيرهم من المتسلّطين ومحبّي العلّو والفساد في الأرض.
كتب مكيافيلّي مسرحيّة "الماندراغولا" بين عامي 1504- 1518، لكنّها لم تصدر إلاّ في عام 1524.
مسرحيّة "الماندراغولا" هي ترجمة إجتماعيّة للفلسفة السياسيّة والفكريّة الشهيرة التي يقوم عليها كتاب "الأمير": الغاية تبرّر الوسيلة، لكنّها تقدّم كّلاً من الغاية والوسيلة في أبشع صورة وأشدّ الفساد، الغاية تبرّر الوسيلة: فكيف إذا كانت الوسيلة أبشع من الغاية، وكانت الغاية أبشع من الوسيلة، وكان كلاهما مشبعاً بالرذيلة، مقرفاً؟...
تدور المسرحيّة خلال زمن لا يزيد عن أربع وعشرين ساعة، تسعى كلّ الشخصيات خلالها لأن تحقّق مأرباً شخصياً خاصّاً بها، ولا يتحقّق هذا المأرب إلا إذا تحققت مآربُ الآخرين، فالزوجُ المغفّل ودكتور الفلسفة الأحمق نيتشا يريد أن يُرزق بولدٍ، مهما كانت الطريق إلى ذاك شاقّة ملتوية.
والعاشقُ الفاسق كالّيماكو، يريد أن يصل إلى زوجةِ نيتشا بالمكر والخديعة، فيستعين بصديقه الخبيث ليغوريو، وقد طمع هذا في بداية الأمر بجائزة لا تزيد عن وجبة غداء، ثمّ طمع بعدها بأكثر من هذا بكثير.
وهناك الراهب المرتشي تيموتيو الذي يريد ان يلمّ رشوة بعد رشوة على شكل صدقات يدّعي أنّها سيوزّعها على الفقراء، وذلك مقابل فتاوى فاجرة على المقاس، تساعد أولئك على تنفيذ خديعتهم، أما الخادم سيرو فلا يريد إلاّ إسعاد سيّده كالّيماكو وبالطريقة التي يريدها سيّده، هناك أيضاً سوسترانا، حماة نيتشا، التي تريد لإبنتها لوكريتسيا زوجة نيتشا، أن تُرزق بولدٍ، قبل أن يموت نيتشا وتتقاذفها الكلاب من بعده.
