إننا الآن في العام 2033، ضربة ماحقة نزلت على كل أوروبا، وتحول العالم إلى ركام وأنقاض وأصبح عالماً سفيلياً مغلقاً مخيفاً، وانقرضت البشريّة تقريباً ولم ينجو منها سوى بضعة آلاف لا يعرفون إن كانوا هم الناجون الوحيدون على ظهر هذا الكوكب.
إنّهم يعيشون في مترو موسكو، أكبر ملجأ يحمي من الغازات الجوية، بناه الإنسان قط، البشرية في ملاذها الأخير في عالم لا غد فيه، وليس فيه مكان للأحلام أو الخطط أو الأمل، عالم لم يبق فيه من المشاعر سوى غريزة البقاء بأيّ ثمن.
فدنكه هي المحطة المأهولة في أقصى الشمال على هذا الخط، والتي ما تزال آمنة، يظهر فيها خطر جديد رهيب، أرتيوم شاب يعيش في فدنكه يُكلف بمهمّة إختراق قلب النفق والذهاب إلى محطة بوليس الأسطورية ليحذر الجميع وينذرهم بالخطر المقيت، والحصول على المساعدة، هو يحمل مستقبل أهالي محطته بيديه ومستقبل المترو وربما مستقبل البشريّة كلّها أيضاً.
وفي أحد الأيّام اكتشف أن مترو موسكو أكبر ملجأ نوويّ في العالم، فقط خطط وهندس ونفذ كملجأ، افتتح المترو في عام 1935 ويضم الآن 188 محطة بأنفاق يبلغ طولها 194 ميلاً، وبه 102 خط، ويوفر النقل لــ 7 مليون شخص يومياً، كما تفيد بعض التقارير غير المؤكدة بوجود نفق ثان أعمق لخط مترو خاص بالحكومة والنخبة، يعرف بالمترو 2 أو دي 6.
