تحكي الرواية قصة الشاب زهدي، وهو شاب يحاول أن يغلّف تصرفاته بغلاف التديّن، لكن طباع السوء تأبى إلا أن تظهر فيه من شرب للخمر والتدخين وملاحقة النساء وغيرها، ويقوم مع عدد من رفاقه برحلة برية انطلاقا من بلدة الصفاوي في محافظة المفرق باتجاه وادي راجل قريبا من الحدود السورية، ويتيهون عند الحدود في ليلتهم تلك، ومن ثم تلقي قوات النظام في الطرف السوري القبض عليه .
ويتنقل خلال ما يزيد عن سنة بين عدد من السجون وينال أصنافا من العذاب، حتى يتعرض السجن الذي هو فيه لهجمة من واحدة من المجموعات الإسلامية المقاتلة، فيتحول سجينا لدى هذه المجموعة، لكن تساعده الظروف في أن يتحول إلى خادم في قصر الأمير، ومن ثم تعمل الظروف لصالحه أيضا فيتمكن من الانقلاب على أميره ويصبح حاكما للإمارة، حتى ينتهي به الأمر عائدا في أسماله البالية من حيث أتى .
