الكتاب يتناول الفن القبطى باعتباره فنا مصريا أصيلا، فهو وريث 3000 عام من الفن الفرعونى الذى أثر على الفن القبطى وهو الفن الذى انحدر مباشرة من الهيروغليفية، كما تأثر أيضا بالحضارات الرومانية والبيزنطية، وذلك عبر الأيقونات المصرية وآثار الرسومات الجدارية القبطية وبدوره ترك الفن القبطى آثاره على الفن الاسلامى بعد الفتوحات العربية. يعرض الكتاب الكثير من المصطلحات والأفكار المرتبطة بأقباط مصر، وقد شارك فى هذا العمل مجموعة كبيرة من الكتاب والفنانين المصريين والأجانب الذين تحدثوا وعلقوا على الأعمال الفنية التشكيلية فكتب الدكتور ناصر الأنصارى عن الفن القبطى فى مصر، وتحدث إدوار الخراط عن الفن القبطى وتأملات فى رؤى مصرية، وتحدث عن تاريخ الأقباط وعشرين قرنا من التاريخ المسيحى فى مصر كريستيان كانوييه، كما علق جان دانيال دوبوا على مخطوطات نجع حمادى، وآن بودور على الكتابة واللغة والكتب، ويتناول الكتاب أيضا تصوير الفن القبطى للحياة الدينية وطقوس السحر والتقاليد الجنائزية عند الأقباط ويكتب عنها مارفن مايير ودومينيك دينازيت، أما الفن القبطى والحياة اليومية فقامت بوصف صوره مارى-هيلين روتشوفسكايا، ويختتم الكتاب بشهادة للفنان المصرى إيزاك فانوس عن الأيقونات.
