وفى أول أيامه بمسكنه يقضي مستر لوكوود ليلته في بيت هيثكليف فيقابل كاثي زوجة ابن هثكلف وبنت كاثرين حبيبة هثكلف وف هذه الليلة يرى فى منامه حلما مريعا : يرى شبح كاثرين إيرنشو، يترجاه أن يسمح له بالدخول. فيسأل مستر لووكود السيده نيللى دين مديرة المنزل ، و من هنا تبدأ أحداث الرواية حول الثلاثون عاما الماضية بلسان المربية التي عاشت مع هذه العائلة وشاهدت أجيالها المتعاقبة وأصبحت على دراية بطباعهم وكانت قريبة منهم كثيرا .
