إيميلي جين برونتى روائية بريطانية وشاعرة، وُلدت في 30 يوليو 1818، في منزل القسيس الكائن في هاوورث في عائلة موهوبة رقيقه الحال، كان ابوها ايرلنديا يعمل راعيا، وتوفيت 19 ديسمبر 1848.
تشتهر برونتي بروايتها مرتفعات ويذرينغ، وهي اخت شارلوت برونتي التي كتبت ( جين اير )، و قد كانت (إميلى) كاتبة متفردة في عصرها جمعت بينها وبين شقيقتيها (آن و شارلوت) برونتي قواسم مشتركة ،حيث تشابهن في نبوغهن الأدبي ، وهزالهن البدني، و قد بدأت إميلى وأختاها شارلوت برونتي وآن برونتي بنسج حكايات عن سكان ممالك خيالية والتأريخ لحياتهم ونضالاتهم.

قد يبدو لقارئ هذه الرواية، قبل أن يخوض عبابها، أنّها تتحدّث عن سلسلة جبال تقع شمال إنكلترا، لكنّه سيجد أن المقصود بــ "مرتفعات ويذرنغ" منزل ريفيّ في رأس جبلٍ حوله أراضٍ واسعة كانت مسرحاً للأحداث الّتي نسجت إميلي برونتي منها هذا العمل الروائيّ العظيم.
فإن كانت مرتفعات ويذرنغ فردوساً فهي ليست بالشيء الّذي يدوم، وهي لا محالة زائلة، لكنّ الروائيّة أرادت أن تطرح لنا - عبر الصراع الدائر - فكرة الحياة والموت، وتتابع الأجيال عبر الزمن، وأن الإنسان مهما حرص على هذه الدنيا ومتاعها الزائل لا بدّ سيفارقها، ولذا فعليه أن يكون حذراً من مغبّة أعماله السيّئة، وأن يسير في ركب الخير، وأن يزرع في أرض خصبة، لا أن يضع بذاره في أرض بور.
لقد بلغ "هيثكليف"، الّذي يمثّل جانب الشرّ والحقد والكراهية، ذروة ثرائه، وسيطر وتجبّر واستولى على أملاك عائلتين، وحاول أن يمحو اسميهما من الوجود، لكن...
