السينما بلا شك هي أوسع الفنون انتشاراً في العالم. ولا يرجع السبب في ذلك إلى مجرد أن الأفلام التي تنتجها الدول المختلفة تعرض في كل أنحاء العالم.
إنما يرجع قبل كل شيء إلى أن السينما تستطيع بما لها من حرفيات تتحسن يوماً بعد يوم، وبما تحققه من أعمال في تزايد مستمر، أن تقيم صلة عالمية مباشرة من الفكر الخلاق.
ومع ذلك، نجد أنه لم يُستغل من موارد السينما التي لا تنفد، خلال نصف القرن الأول من عمرها، إلا جزء لا يذكر.
أرجو ألا تسيئوا فهم ما أعنيه. فأنا لا أتكلم عما تم إنجازه، لأنه قد تم إنجاز الكثير الذي يعتبر ممتازاً بحق. ويحتل المكان الأول، فيما يختص بأقصى ما يذهب إليه المضمون، التيار المندفع للأفكار الجديدة والمُثل الجديدة المستحدثة على الشاشة بواسطة الأفكار الاجتماعية الجديدة والمثل الاشتراكية الحديثة.
وأنا إنما أتكلم عما كان من الممكن عمله، وعما تستطيع السينما وحدها أن تعمله: وأعني تلك الأشياء الفذة المعينة، التي لا يمكن تحقيقها وخلقها إلا في دنيا السينما وحدها. فمشكلة الجمع والتأليف بين الفنون، وهو التركيب الذي يمكن تحقيقه في السينما، لم تجد الحل الكامل لها. وتنشأ في الوقت نفسه مشكلات جديدة بأعداد متزايدة.
فما إن تمت لنا السيطرة على حرفية اللون، حتى اضطررنا إلى تناول مشاكل الحجم والمساحة التي أقامتها لنا السينما المجسمة، التي لم تكد تخرج بعد من ثياب مهدها.
وهناك بعد ذلك، معجزة التليفزيون – وهي حقيقة حية تواجهنا في جسارة، وعلى استعداد لأن تلغي تجربة السينما الصامتة والناطقة التي لم يكتمل بعد تمثلها هي نفسها تمثيلاً كاملاً.
فقد كان التوليف، مثلاً، في تجربة السينما الصامتة والناطقة، مجرد مرحلة (كاملة بصورة أو بأخرى) من المنهاج الحقيقي لرؤية الفنان للأحداث وعكسه لها بطريقة خلاقة من خلال وعيه وعواطفه.
أما في التليفزيون، فيصبح التوليف هو منهاج الأحداث نفسها أثناء تقديمها وعرضها في نفس لحظة حدوثها.
