يدرس هذا الكتاب تاريخ المجتمع الأوغاريتي في النصف الثاني من الألفية الثانية قبل الميلاد. وتشغل دراسة مجتمع أوغاريت، واقتصاده، والنظام الاجتماعي الذي كان سائداً فيه، مكانة هامة في التاريخ الوصفي للشرق القديم.
فقد خصص ليفيراني بحثاً خاصاً وهاماً لدراسة التاريخ السياسي للمجتمع الأوغاريتي، كما خصص هـ. كلينجل قسماً خاصاً من كتابه عن تاريخ سورية في الألف الثانية قبل الميلاد، لدراسة التاريخ السياسي لهذه البلاد وساهم كل من ر. دي لانفه، إ. كليما، أ.ن. رينيه، ن.ب. يانكوفسكايا، وم. استور مساهمة كبيرة في دراسة مجتمع أوغاريت عموماً وفي إلقاء مزيد من الضوء على بعض المسائل الهامة في تاريخه الاقتصادي-الاجتماعي.
وقد حاول ن.م. نيكولسكي أن يقدم وصفاً عاماً للعلاقات الزراعية وللبنية الاجتماعية لسكان أوغاريت، وذلك في كتابه الذي وضعه إبان الحرب العالمية الثانية، معتمداً على عدد كبير من النصوص المثيولوجية الواصلة من أوغاريت. إلى جانب ذلك يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب تحليلاً وافياً لبعض النظريات والآراء، في سياق البحث، وذلك عندما سيجري الحديث عن جوانب معينة من النظام الاجتماعي-الاقتصادي الذي ساد في أوغاريت.
