من النادر اليوم ألا نجد في الشروحات والتعليقات على كتاب العهد القديم إشارات متعددة إلى مواقع أثرية، مثل قُمران قرب البحر الميت وأوغاريت على الساحل السوري قرب مدينة اللاذقية. إن موقع قُمران صار اسماً معروفاً إلى حدٍّ ما، أما موقع أوغاريت الذي لا يقل عنه أهميةً، فلم يحظَ بالشهرة التي حظي بها قُمران على الرغم من أن اكتشافه قد ساهم إلى حدٍّ كبير في إعادة ترجمة وتفسير الكثير من كلمات ومقاطع كتاب العهد القديم. وهذا ما دعاني إلى وضع هذا الكتاب الصغير الذي يبحث في حضارة مدينة أوغاريت القديمة وميراثها. لقد كانت أوغاريت واحدةً من مدنٍ كثيرة ملأت عالم الكتاب المقدس، ولكن أهميتها تكمن في تلك الثروة من النصوص الأدبية التي أضافت الكثير إلى معلوماتنا عن عالم الكتاب المقدس، وإلى درجةٍ فاقت ما قدمه أي موقعٍ أثري آخر في شرقي المتوسط، وساعدت على ملء الفجوات بين العالم القديم والعالم الحديث.
