لكننا خرجنا في اليوم التالي إلى سهل التل الأحمر، كانت السماء صافية كالبلور، ولم يكن في السهل أحدٌ غير بضعة حميرٍ متشرّدة ترعى جذور القمح المتبقّية في الحقول بعد الحصاد، بينما أخذت الجداجد تزعق مذعورةً من صهيل الحصان.
لعبنا معاً لعبة المشي الرهوان، سار كلٌّ واحدٍ منّا على رجلٍ واحدة، قفزنا بين خطَّين رسمتهما في الرمل الأحمر، حاول أن يعلِّمني الصهيل، وحاولت أن أعلِّمه الضحك.
اعتليت صهوته وجرينا من أول السهل إلى آخره، ومن آخره إلى أوله، قلت له إنني أحبّه، وإنه سوف يظلّ صديقي طوال عمرنا، وهزّ رأسه وغمر وجهي بشعر عرفه الأشقر الطويل، صهلنا وضحكنا طويلاً.
بعد عشرين عاماً من العمل ينهي "سالم" خدمته في خيالة الدرك، ويعود إلى بيته وأسرته في دير القرن، جالباً معه الرفيق الوحيد الذي ظل معه كل تلك السنوات: حصانه.
تتباين مشاعر أفراد الأسرة نحو هذا الضيف الذي سيصبح الآن جزءاً من العائلة. تدور سلاسل الحكي بين الأبناء الخمسة والأم، وفيما هي تدور تنسج حكايات، وتبني عوالم، تكشف أسراراً، وتهدم أخيلة، تنشئ علاقات وتخرّب حيوات. وحده الأب "سالم النجار"، لا يروي، ومثله الحصان. في روايته هذه، يكتب "ممدوح عزام"، بأسلوب جديدٍ ومختلف عن رواياته السابقة، حكاية عن عائلةٍ بسيطة تعيش طمأنينتها وخوفها، تسليمها ورفضها، سلامها وصراعاتها، لتحرّك في دواخلنا تساؤلات وتأملات لا تنتهي، فيما الحرية تكتب بمعناها الفسيح فصل النهاية.
