عندما أصبحت وحيدة، لم تستطع إبداء مقاومة أكثر، لقد استهلكت قوتها في مواجهة عجراء خاسرة، وفي وقت سيئ، أحست أنها تتلاشى، وهي ترى إلى الخفاء المرعب الذي تقبل عليه، بدأت ترتعش، وغشاها إغماء قصير وغطى جسدها عرق بارد، بيد أنها عندما كانت إمرأة أخرى: "لن تستلم" هذا هو قرارها، وقد نفذته بلا تردد، ودون تراجعات من هذه اللحظة، وحتى الساعة التي ماتت فيها قتيلة في بيت الحصان، وفي ذاكرتها صراخ جميل الذيب المجنون، موتي!... موتي!... موتي!. تبتدئ رواية معراج الموت للروائي والقاص السوري ممدوح عزام بالخطف خلفاً حيث ينقلنا مباشرة إلى مكان مظلم معتم منخفض لا يدخل النور إليه إلا من شق مصراعي النافذة الخشبية العالية وفي هذا المكان تعاني سلمى سكرات الموت فقد سجنها عمها صياح الذي هو زعيم عشيرة الذيب قصاصاً لها لذنب اقترفته فما ذنبها؟ تدور أحداث هذه الرواية فى إحدى قرى الجنوب السورى فى أعقاب 1984 حيث تقدم صورة اجتماعية للريف السورى المعاصر. وبكثير من التعرية وربما التجني قدّم ممدوح عزام بأسلوب مفعم بالإثارة والتشويق جانباً شديد الظلمة من حياتنا مستوراً بالقيم النبيلة والفضيلة المخادعة مقابل بصيص ضوء لا يكاد يرى حتى يتوارى مجدداً، وكأنه أراد أن يفقدنا الأمل تماماً في مجتمع نحلم به أو نرجو أن يأتي سريعاً بعد كل هذا الخراب الذي عم النفوس والبلاد. - أحمد شلتوت -
