عالم نفس وفيلسوف إنساني ألماني أمريكي ولد في مدينة فرانكفورت -ألمانيا في 23 مارس عام 1900. هاجر إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في 1934 من أعماله :الخوف من الحرية (1941) التحليل النفسى والدين (1950) اللغة المنسية : مدخل إلى فهم الأحلام والقصص الخيالية والأساطير (1951) المجتمع العاقل (1955) رسالة سيجموند فرويد : تحليل لشخصيته وتأثيره (1959) أزمة التحليل النفسى : مقالات عن فرويد وماركس وعلم النفس الاجتماعى (1970) تشريح نزوع الإنسان إلى التدمير (1973) كما حرر كتبا، بأقلام كتاب متعددين عن بوذية زن ومفهوم ماركس للإنسان وغيرها توفي فروم في 23 مارس عام 1980.

الأشياء التي يصنعها الإنسان تدخل هي نفسها في تشكيله. هكذا تغدو قيمة الإنسان في قابليته للبيع، بعدما تحوّل كلّ شيء للبيع، ليس فقط السلع والخدمات بل الأفكار، والفن، والابتسام، والقناعة… وأصبح إنسان اليوم مُغرماً بالأجهزة التقنية أكثر من غرامه بالبشر الآخرين وقضايا الحياة المُحقة. والإنسان الذي”تشيّأ”بات يشعر بأنه سجين ذاته ووحدته وقلقه، حتى صارت الحرية تُخيفه. يؤكد فروم في كتابه أنّ المجتمعات الرأسمالية حولّت الإنسان المعاصر إلى مستهلك أبدي. هكذا مات الإنسان روحياً وعاشت الأشياء، وهذا الموت الروحي للإنسان يظلّ الخطر الأكبر على البشرية.
