بي دي جيمس: وُلدت في أكسفورد عام ١٩٢٠. عملت منذ عام ١٩٤٩ حتى ١٩٦٨ في هيئة الصحة الوطنية، ثم في وزارة الداخلية. كانت عضوًا بالجمعية المَلكية للأدب والجمعية المَلكية للفنون، وتولَّت رئاسة هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية، كما كانت عضوًا بمجلس الفنون بإنجلترا. استغلَّت خبراتها العملية في كتابة رواياتها، وفازت بعدة جوائز في أدب الجريمة في بريطانيا، وأمريكا، وإيطاليا، واسكندنافيا. تُوفِّيت عام ٢٠١٤.

الجنس البشري على أعتاب الفناء، والسبب ليس حربًا أو كارثةً طبيعية، بل لأنه صار عقيمًا لسببٍ لم يستطع أحدٌ تفسيره. لقد مر على آخِر ولادة بشرية سُجِّلت على الأرض خمسة وعشرون عامًا، والآن تقف الحضارة البشرية على حافة الهاوية؛ إذ بفقد البشر القدرةَ على الإنجاب، فقدوا رغبتهم في الحياة والعمل، وانتشر الانتحار في العالم كله، ولم يَعُد لدى العالَم مستقبل يتطلع إليه. في خضم كل ذلك، يعيش «ثيودور فارون» — أستاذ التاريخ الكَهل، وابن خالة حاكم إنجلترا الطاغية — حياةً مُملة لا يكسر رتابتها إلا لقاؤه بطالبته السابقة، «جوليان»، وجماعتها السرية الصغيرة المتنافرة. وشيئًا فشيئًا يجد «فارون» نفسَه في غِمار مغامرةٍ تحبس الأنفاس مع «جوليان» وجماعتها في مواجَهة بطش الحاكم وأعوانه، مغامرةٍ قد تحمل الأمل الأخير للجنس البشري بأكمله.
