منذ تأسيسها كان على الدولة العراقية أن تكافح في وجه القضية الكردية التي كانت تؤثّر في كافة جوانب حياتها، الاقتصادية – الاجتماعية والسياسية، إضافةً إلى علاقاتها الدولية. أما كرد العراق، من ناحيتهم، فقد شكّلوا حركة قومية تقدّمت منجزاتها بشوط كبير على مثيلاتها في المجتمعات الكردية الأخرى.تستكشف المؤلّفة آليات العلاقات بين كرد العراق وبين الدولة العراقية منذ بداية حكم البعث إلى الوقت الحاضر. وتعتمد في عملها على ثروةٍ من الموادِّ لكي تتبَّع بدقةٍ ظهور الهوية القومية الكردية في العراق. وتتناول بالتفصيل التحوّلات الاجتماعية – الاقتصادية والسياسية والأيديولوجية التي مرَّت بالمجتمع الكرديِّ العراقيِّ خلال ما يقرب من خمسة عقود. وتركِّز على العمليّتين التوأمَين: تشكيل الأمّة وبناء الدولة. وتستعرض أيضاً خصائصَ الحركة الكردية في العراق التي تميّزها عن المجتمعات الكردية في البقاع الأخرى من المنطقة.إنّ هذا السرد للتحوّلات المعقّدة لمصير الكرد لا يتوقّف عند الكشف عن حقيقة التعقيدات السياسية في عراق اليوم فحسب، بل ويبيّن أيضاً تأثير الكُرد في الخريطة الجيوستراتيجية لمنطقة الشرق الأوسط برمّتها.
