فكاهيات الجوع والجوعيات هذا التراث الاجتماعي والإقتصادي نشأ على المستوى الأدبي الكثير من الحكايات والطرائف والأشعار والأمثال الشعبية ، من هذه الخلفية الإقتصادية والاجتماعية ورثنا كل هذه الثروة من ظرافات الجوعيات ونكات البخلاء والثقلاء والطفيليين ، الأدب العربي مليء بحكايات التخمة والذين تراهنوا على الأكل فأكلوا حتى أشرفوا على الموت ، والكثير منهم ما زالوا بيننا . يستعرض تاريخيا ابتلاء شعوب الشرق الأوسط بالجوع والمجاعات التي وصلت أحيانا لحد أكل الناس لحوم أطفالهم، كما ذكر ابن الجوزي. ولكن المؤلف يمضي فيصف كيف أن التنكيت والفكاهة كانت وسيلة من وسائل التخفيف عن هذه المعاناة. ويورد الكتاب أمثلة مؤنسة عن كبار الظرفاء الذين تميزوا بنكاتهم عن الجوع وعن الحصول على الطعام بوسائلهم الهزلية ودعاباتهم وأشعارهم الظريفة. يحتل أشعب الطماع الصدارة في الكتاب كمثال ناصع لما يقول، ثم يمضي المؤلف فيستعرض كيف أن هذه الظاهرة تحولت في العصر العباسي إلى مهنة احترفها بعض الشعراء والظرفاء تحت عنوان التطفل، وهي طريقة ما زالت معروفة في لجوء بعض الشعراء والأدباء إلى التطفل على الولائم واقتحام الحفلات التي لم يدعهم إليها أحد
