نص نثرى يخلد يوميات عاشها الشاعر والكاتب البرتغالى "فرناندو بيسوا" ، الذى يهرب من واقع المحفوف بآفات القلق والضجر والقنوط والانكسار ، فاسم الكتاب يصف حالة "بيسوا" فى حياته "اللاطمأنينة" من كل شيء ، فهو الذى يصرح بأن الكتابة تعنى عنده احتقار الذات ، ومع ذلك فهو لا يستطيع التخلى عنها ، فهى مثل مخدر يثير اشمئزازه ومع ذلك يتناوله ، ويعلن مرة أخرى أن الكتابة تعنى فقدان الذات ، وبما أن كل شيء فقدان أكيد ، فهو يفقد ذاته بدون فرح ، وفى موضع آخر يصادف القارئ موقفاً غريباً عجيباً من الكتابة حيث يقول بأنها أصبحت عديمة المتعة بالنسبة إليه وصار عنده فعل منح التعبير للانفعالات وتجويد العبارات أمراً مبتذلاً يمارسه بدون حماس أو تألق.
أما فيما يخص جوابه عن سؤال "لماذا يكتب؟" فهو يقول: "لأنى أنا الداعى إلى التنازل والانسحاب لم أتعلم بعد ممارسة هذا التنازل على أتم وجه ، لم أتعلم التخلى عن النزوع إلى الشعر والنثر ، على أن أكتب كما لو كنت أنفذ عقاباً والعقاب الأكبر هو معرفتى بأن ما أكتبه باطل فاشل وغير يقينى
