يتضمن هذا الكتاب تسعة فصول: الفصول الثلاثة الأولى كُرِّست للمقولات المؤسسة التي بدونها لا يكون لعلم الاجتماع السياسي موضوع: السلطة (الفصل الأول)، الدولة (الفصل الثاني)، المنظومات والنظم السياسية (الفصل الثالث). وهي تتتالى وفقاً لمنطق بسيط تبدو فيه الظاهرة السلطوية، في كل مرحلة، في تعقّد إجتماعي متزايد. أما محور الفصل الرابع وحتى التاسع فبني وفق منطق حصر معاكس. ونعني بذلك أن هناك تركيزاً تدريجياً على سياقات وفاعلين ذوي صفة نوعية خاصة سياسياً: التكيّف الاجتماعي (الفصل الرابع)، والعمل الجماعي (الفصل الخامس)، ثم المشاركة السياسية (الفصل السادس)، وأخيراً الأحزاب (الفصل السابع)، والممثلون والحكم (الفصل الثامن)، والمهنة السياسية (الفصل التاسع). وعلى مستوى مختلف كلياً، يوجد الفصل الأخير: "وصف الواقع أم بناؤه؟". وتبريره يُستمد من أنّ أصالة الخطاب العلمي بالنسبة للخطب الأخرى الممكنة عن "السياسي" تكمن في التساؤل بشكل منظَّم عن الشروط المنهجية لصحته. إننا لم نُرد إذن الفصل بين تقديم الأجوبة والتأمل في طريقة طرح الأسئلة.
