اعتمد المؤلف في كتابه هذا على تجارب وخبر العراق والوطن العربي في أصعدة التحولات الاجتماعية والسياسية التي تحققت منذ منتصف القرن العشرين.
ويتكون الكتاب من اثنا عشر فصلاً يكمل الواحد الآخر، وهذه الفصول تكون المادة المنهجية لعلم الاجتماع السياسي وترسم أبعاده الأكاديمية والتطبيقية وتحدد مجالاته وأهدافه الجوهرية.
إن الفصل الأول من الكتاب يدرس ماهية ونشوء وتطور ومنهجية وأهداف علم الاجتماع السياسي، والفصل الثاني يهتم بعلاقة علم الاجتماع السياسي بعلم الاجتماع والعلوم السياسية والعوامل التي مهدت لظهوره وتطوره، بينما يدور الفصل الثالث حول دراسة البنى والنظم الاجتماعية والسياسية, والفصل الرابع يهتم بدراسة تأريخ علم الاجتماع السياسي، أما الفصل الخامس قيدرس الإضافات التي قدمها ميكافيلي لتطور علم الاجتماع السياسي، بينما يدرس الفصل السادس من الكتاب السلوك السياسي، في حين يدرس الفصل السابع السلطة السياسية والنظم السياسية وشرعية السلطة ومبررات شرعيتها وأنواعها ووظائفها وخلفياتها الاجتماعية والطبقية وأثرها في تكوين الرأي العام، والفصل التاسع يهتم بدراسة جماعات الضغط، أما الفصل العاشر من الكتاب فيدرس جماعة الضغط الصهيوينية في أمريكا والإمعان في معاداة العراق، بينما يدرس الفصل الحادي عشر موضوع القيادة وصفاتها ووظائفها وأنواعها، والفصل الثاني عشر والأخير يدرس التنشئة السياسية وقنواتها الفكرية والتربوية، وأخيراً هناك مصطلحات علم الاجتماع السياسي المترجمة إلى الانكليزية.
