لقد عرف الإنسان المقدّس منذ فجر التاريخ، وسعى في ذلك جاهدا لمواجهة القلق العميق الذي يكتنف وجوده داخل كون قُذف فيه وأُسلم للموت. تجلّى ذلك عبر منظومات تعبير، سواء كانت مفاهيمية أو طقوسية أو رمزيّة، باعتبارها تمظهرات عبر للغات الإنسان وأشكال عيشه. هذا ما يدرسه هذا الكتاب الذي يُعَدّ من الكلاسيكيات في مناهج دراسة الظواهر الدينية، مقدّماً نموذجاً للقراءة العلميّة لظاهرة التديّن وللمقدّس. وفي الوقت الذي يحضر فيه علم الأديان كعلم مستقل يناقش إشكالات على صلة حميمة بحياة الإنسان، فإن الأبحاث التي تتناول الظاهرة الدينية في الفكر العربي المعاصر تكاد تنحصر في العلوم الشرعيّة والفقهيّة؛ ليبقى العقل (المؤمن أو العلماني) يطوف حول المناهج القديمة التي تبلورت في أحضان الملل والنِّحل.
إن ترجمة هذا الكتاب تهدف إلى إطلاع القارئ العربي على حقول معرفية ترتبط بــالعلوم الدينية بالمعنى الإبستمولوجي للكلمة، مثل: علم الاجتماع الديني، أو الإناسة الدينيّة أو علم النفس الديني... وهي علوم نحتاج إليها لننفتح على رحابة تنوع العلاقة بالمقدّس والفهم العلمي لظواهر التديّن.
