لا خلاف أن موضوع العمر المديد للإمام المهدي عليه السلام موضع تساؤل البعض من الناس، وقد تصدى كثير من العلماء -ومنذ ألف عام- لبحث هذا الموضوع فأفردوا له في كتبهم أبواباً خاصة ترفع استبعاد الناس لطول عمر الإمام الغائب وهو لا يزال عند تأليف تلك الكتب لم يتجاوز الحد المتعارف من الأعمال إلا بقليل. وما يسعى إليه هذا البحث الذي بين يدينا هو دراسة إمكانية العمر الطويل على ضوء القرآن الكريم والعلم الحديث وبالتالي أنباء أن الدين والعلم يقولان بإمكان العمر الطويل للإنسان، وأن هناك نماذج كثيرة لذلك صرحت على صعيد العلم والدين، فلا يتعدى الأمر إلا مخالفة ما هو متعارف من الأعمار البشرية دون أن يكون محالاً.
