صمم الكتاب أصلا على شكل دليل مدرسي لطلاب الطور الأول في السوسيولوجيا . وكذلك الجمهور الكبير من المثقفين الراغبين في توسيع معارفهم في العلوم الاجتماعية . ولكن مع تقدم إنجازه اكتسى ابعادا أكثر أهمية تعدى من كونه مجرد عرض إلى ولوج في عمق الاختصاص دون تملص من تعقيداته ومناقشة نماذجه النظرية بطريقة أصلية . إذ قدم كل مساهم في هذا العمل إشكالية تفتح النقاش على مختلف النقاط التي أثيرت.
إن هذه الرغبة في الانفتاح على واقع النقاش السوسيولوجي الحالي . وتقديم صورة واضحة عنه من دون تبسيط المسائل النظرية القائمة . وتقديم نظرة شاملة مع التركيز على الإنتاجات المعاصرة دون إغفال المرجعيات الأساسية المعاد قراءتها هو ما يشكل الأهيمة المعتبرة لهذا الكتاب وما يبرر تماما ترجمته .
يضم الكتاب ثلاثة أجزاء رئيسية منها جزء أول عام يشمل أربعة أقسام تتناول ميلاد السوسيولوجيا .والتيارات النظرية الكبرى وثلاث إشكاليات عرضية التي اقتصرت الترجمة عليها دون القسم المخصص للمنهجية .
ويتطرق الجزء الثاني إلى اثنتي عشرة حقل من الحقول السوسيولوجية .
بينما يفتح الجزء الآخير نافذة على مناقشة الممارسات السوسيولوجية .
ومن المؤسف أن الترجمة لم تشمل الكتاب كله . ومع ذلك فالإنجاز ضخم على اعتبار ان مثل هذه الاعمال تتطلب تعاونا من أطراف عديدة .
وهذا من قبيل الممكن مستقبليا . ومجمل القول أن ترجمة الجزء الأول من الكتاب محطة اولية ضرورية لفتح النقاش وإعادة النظر في السوسيولوجيا في الجزائر في المرحلة الراهنة .
