جاء اختيار هذه الفصول والمقالات عن قصد بعد أن لاحظت أن أغلب المؤلفات العربية في النظرية الاجتماعية دارت في فلك النظريتين: الوظيفية من ناحية والماركسية التقليدية من ناحية ثانية، في الوقت الذي ينشغل فيه المنظرون المعاصرون – خاصة منظري ما بعد الحداثة – بمسائل مختلفة تتعلق بعالم يرونه تغير تغيراً ضخماً عن العالم الذي واجهه ماركس وفيبر ودوركايم.
كما ظهرت اتجاهات حديثة في الفكر الماركسي منها النزعة الإنسانية الماركسية، ومدرسة فرانكفورت (النظرية النقدية)، والبنيوية الماركسية، والتأكيد على الفاعل والفعل في المجال السياسي، وأخيراً دراسة الثقافة في مجتمع ما بعد الحداثة. وتوجد في الوقت الراهن أربع نظريات في علم الاجتماع يزداد رواجها، وهى: البنيوية، والنظرية البنائية، ونظرية شبكة العلاقات، وعلم الاجتماع الوجودي. ويتفق ريتزر مع كنور-سيتينا على أن نظرية التبادل، وعلم الاجتماع الظاهراتي، والمنهجية الشعبية (الإثنوميثودولوجيا)، وعلم الاجتماع الوجودي زادت قوتها في علم الاجتماع منذ السبعينيات، وباتت تهدد بأن تحل محل النظريات الكبرى (مثل الوظيفية البنائية، ونظرية الصراع، والنظريات الماركسية الجديدة) كنظريات مهيمنة في علم الاجتماع.
