يضع المؤلف بين أيدي المهتمين بالأدب العراقي القديم في هذا الكتاب آخر ما استجد في حقل النصوص الأدبية المسمارية التي دوّنت بالسومرية والأكدية (البابلية). يتصدر الكتاب مقدمة ضمّنها المؤلف بداية أعمال الاستكشافات الأثرية في القطر مشيراً فيها إلى جهود العلماء الحثيثة في القرن الماضي في استنساخ النصوص المسمارية ومقارنتها وفكّ رموزها وصولاً إلى قراءتها.
وقد تبين بفضل تلك الجهود أن سكان وادي الرافدين استخدموا الخط المسماري لتدوين لغتين كانتا متداولتين في القطر في العصور القديمة هما السومرية ثم الأكدية. وقد دوّن الأقدمون كافة شؤون حياتهم اليومية بهذا الخط الذي بقي في الاستعمال حقباً زمنية طويلة جاوزت ثلاثة آلاف سنة منذ اختراعه لأول مرة على يد السومريين في حدود 3000 قبل الميلاد وحتى القرن الأول الميلادي. أما مواضيع الكتاب فجاءت مقسمة على عشرة فصول جاءت عناوينها كما يلي: الفصل الأول: البدايات، الفصل الثاني: الأساطير السومرية والبابلية... الفصل الثالث: الملاحم، الفصل الرابع: القصة الخرافية، الفصل الخامس: أدب الحكمة، الفصل السادس: أدب السخرية، الفصل السابع: الرسائل، الفصل الثامن: التراتيل، الفصل التاسع: الغزل، الفصل العاشر: الرثاء.
