الرواية توثق قصتين، شخصية درويش البطل الباحث عن الخلود من دون أن يدري، وشخصية مدينة البصرة، متعددة الثقافات والامكانات، حيث ولد درويش ومات فيها. فالخطيب يرسم شخصية درويش عن طريق القصص التي عاشها، في نفس الوقت يركز كثيراً على وصف مدينة البصرة، حاراتها، انهارها، جسورها، عوائلها، ويفرد قصة كاملة لحوار بين نخلتين، رمز مدينة البصرة. هذا المزج يجعل القارئ يسافر مع الشخصية والمدينة ليعيش أحداثا لم يشهدها وأماكن لم يزرها، فمن لم يذهب للبصرة ولم يلتق بدرويش، لا ينتابه العناء في معرفة ردود أفعاله، كما أنه لا يتيه وهو يعبر جسورها ويتنقل بين بساتينها، أو يستطعم تمرها.
الرواية لم تأت منسجمة مع قدرات ماجد الخطيب التي أشرت لها آنفا، فلو أنه انتهى بالعودة لليلة وفاة درويش، وأقفلها لكانت أكثر اقناعاً من إضافة فصل فلاش باك على الرواية، هذا الفصل لم أجد له تفسيراً غير، ساعات الغيبوبة التي سبقت طلب السيف لمقاتلة عزرائيل، وهو ما كان يدور في ذاكرة درويش، عندما بقي لوحده بالغرفة، فهل كان الراوي درويشا أم هو ماجد الخطيب؟ أترك لكم حيرتي بعد أن تختتموا قراءة الرواية.
