ولد سليموفيتش لعائلة مسلمة بوسنية بارزة في 1910 في توزلا، التحق لدراسة اللغة الصربية الكرواتية وآدابها في جامعة بلغراد كلية فقه اللغة وتخرج في عام 1934. ألقي القبض عليه للمشاركة في حركة المقاومة المناهضة للفاشية في عام 1943. بعد الحرب، أقام لفترة وجيزة في بلغراد، وفي 1947 انتقل إلى سراييفو، حيث كان استاذ في كلية فقه اللغة، رئيس قسم الدراما في المسرح الوطني، و رئيس تحرير دار نشر. في عام 1971 انتقل إلى بلغراد حيث عاش حتى وفاته في عام 1982.
