وهي ملحمة الوطن المضيّع والمستعاد، ويتمثل هدفها الأساسى في رسم طريق المعاناة التي اجتازها المثقفون، وتحوُّلِهم إلى مناضلين فعالين وصناع للتاريخ. ويسود في الرواية هاجس يؤكد أن السعادة الشخصية التي كان أبطالها الأربعة الرئيسيون يبحثون عنها لا تتحقق إلا حين ترتبط بسعادة الشعب والوطن
