"طريق العذاب" أفضل ثلاثية عن الحرب الأهلية مستهلّة برواية "الأختان" حيث كشف تولستوي فيها عن قدرته الفائقة الساحرة في وصف السعادة، فرح الحياة اليومية، والتعبير عن الإحساس بالإنتفاضة الشعبية ورياح التغيير التاريخية، وهو يتميّز بين الكتّاب الروس، وإلى درجة بعيدة، بحب وقداسة محسوسة للحياة، وفكر أبطاله يؤثر في الأغلب بجانبه الإيجابي، والتأكيد على المغزى العظيم للوجود، وهو سعادة الإنسان، سعادة الشعب.
في "طريق العذاب" كشف ألكسي عن سعة موهبته الملحمية، ونبوغه في الرسم بالكلمات، والفن الشاسع الأبعاد، كما أنه بنى جسراً يوصل بين تراث الأدب الكلاسيكي الروسي والأدب السوفييتي الذي وهبه كل إلهامه المبدع.
إنَّ تولستوي قصّاص بارع ذو مهارة طبيعية هائلة، فأنت حين تفتح كتابه تجد نفسك وأنت تقرأ مستسلماً للوحات والصفحات إستسلام المشاهد للمسرح، إنَّ "الصباح الممطر" في نهاية الثلاثية هذه غير ممطر باليأس، بل بالتشدّد الحازم إزاء الناس الذين شرعوا في بناء عالم جديد بعد أن مرّوا في "طريق العذاب" ولا "أنظف منهم".
