ثلاثة وعشرون ناشراً ألمانياً رفضوا طبع هذه الرواية. لم يخطر ببال أحد منهم أن قصة عن دمشف، وعن الحديث الشفهي، تهم أي قارئ ألماني، فالأدب العربي كان آنذاك قارة مجهولة. وكان رفيق شامي كاتباً مغموراً نشر سبعة كتب لم تلق نجاحاً يذكر. وبعد عناءٍ، أخذ مدير جديد لإحدى دور النشر النص، وأوكل أحد خبرائه بتنقيح الكتاب، فقصقص أجنحة القصة الدمشقية ليحولها إلى رواية أوروبية صغيرة لطيفة لا أثر فيها للشفاهية.
كانت تلك اللحظة حاسمة في مسيرة رفيق شامي الأدبية. بعد تفكير دام ثلاثة أيام أبلغ الناشر أنه يرفض هذا التنقيح وأنه لا يريد تغيير سطر من أسطر الكتاب وكانت المفاجأة أجابه الناشر أنه عندما قرأ اقتراحات المحقق قال له: لن يقبل بهكذا مسخ لرواية أي كاتب يحترم نفسه. لذلك قرر أن يوكل رجلاً آخر بتدقيق لغة النص فقط والحفاظ عليها كما رواها رفيق شامي. وهكذا كان.
صدر هذا الكتاب في تشرين الأول (أكتوبر) 1989م وبيع منه خلال السنة الأولى 200 ألف نسخة وبيعت حقوق الترجمة لـ 22 لغة. وبعد ثلاث سنوات حصد الكتاب ست جوائز أدبية وتجاوزت طبعاته حتى اليوم المليوني نسخة.
