تتحدث الرواية عن الجندي سعيد، الذي استجاب لنداء الاحتياط المدني أثناء اجتياح الجيش الإسرائيلي للبنان في حزيران عام ١٩٨٢، وهو الذي لم يتم انتقاؤه لعملية إنزال بوساطة حوامات "الهليكوبتر"، لكنه تعلق بسيارة "الزميل" العسكرية التي تنقل رفاقه لتنفيد مهمة إنزال لمجموعة "كوماندوس" قاموا بعملية إنزال خلف خطوط الجيش الإسرائيلي، للسيطرة على تلة استراتيجية في لبنان.
وانقطاع مجموعة "الكوماندوس" عن القيادة العامة وعن غرفة العمليات طوال سبعة أيام _حتى في الاتصالات_ في الوقت الذي تعرضت فيه المجموعة لغارات عنيفة من الطيران الإسرائيلي. وبالتالي قاد عملية الانسحاب الجندي الذي كان زائدا عن المهمة.
