علاء حليحل أحد الكتاب الشباب الذين جسدوا في كتاباتهم النزوع إلى الانعتاق من رقبة الواقع المثقل بكواليس التشرد والضياع، وهو يتشبث بذاكرته المليئة بعبق الذكريات ينسج منها آفاق الغد الموعود كما يشكل النيران في كل ما هو بالٌ وعفن، ليطلق كل ما هو أصيل. تعكس "السجادة" ذلك الصراع بين ما هو لا مادي متجذر في أعماق النفس وبين ما يصطرع في عقد الإنسان من رغبة في الحصول على ما هو مادي..
"في تلك اللحظة أقنعت نفسي بأن سجادتك لا تزال تذكرني بك، وهي تدعوني لبيعها، فقلت أبيعها فأصيب عصفورين بحجر: آكل وأدخر، وأتخلص من آخر ما يمكن أن يعيد طيفك إليّ". وبلغة مرنة يعبر الكاتب عن حالة القمع النفسي والجسدي التي يعيشها أبناء جيله. "لم يكن إطلاق الغاز المسيل للدموع قد بدأ بعد، ولكنه في وسط الضرب وتكسير العصي على جنوبنا، أغمي علي".
مُنحت جائزة القصة القصيرة، في مسابقة الكاتب الشاب للعام 2002 التي تنظمها مؤسسة عبد المحسن القطّان ضمن برنامجها للثقافة والعلوم، إلى علاء حليحل على مجموعته قصص لأوقات الحاجة؛ التي تتميّز بأنها ممتعة وطريفة وجريئة، فيها غنى سرديّ وحبكات تنجح في إيجاد حلول فنية خلاّقة. وتقدّم قصّاً يقوم على علاقات الشخوص بعالمهم اليومي المديني بأسلوب قريب من النسق الصحفي الصافي والنضر، ومن النسق المسرحي الحواري، في آن واحد.
