إنها مِصْر، بلد حيَّر القاصي والداني، وهذا ما دفع صاحب هذا الكتاب (وهو أحد كبار الساسة الغربيين في العصر الاستعماري) إلى تصدير مقدمة كتابه بمقولة اللورد «ملنر» الذي يؤكد فيها على هذه الحقيقة. يهدف الكاتب هنا للوصول إلى أن إصرار بريطانيا على جَعل مصر في قبضتها عبر عشرات السنين يرجع لرغبتها في الحفاظ على مصالحها في الشرق ليس إلا، وأنها دُفِعت إلى مِصْر دفعًا. ولم يدخر الكاتب جُهدًا في إنزال التُهم على من يرون أن بريطانيا كانت تستهدف مصر منذ القِدَم. وهذا ما دعاه إلى السير نحو فكرة رئيسية خلال سرده وهي؛ أن بريطانيا إنما جاءت إلى مصر لتحريرها، أو لتجهيزها للتحرر. ولم يغفل الكاتب عن ذكر الأثر الكبير الذي خلَّفته الحملة الفرنسية على مصر، خاصةً الثقافي.
