يوسف بن همام آصاف: كاتب ومؤرخ لبناني، ولد عام ١٨٥٩م، تعلَّم العربية والإيطالية ومبادئ العلوم في مدرسة «مار عبدا» التي أنشأتها عائلته في لبنان، وقد عُيِّن مدرسًا في عكا، وأتقن في تلك الفترة اللغة الفرنسية.
سافر إلى عدد من البلدان كإيطاليا وتركيا، واستقر به المقام في مصر، حيث عمل مترجمًا، وقام بشراء مطبعة المحروسة وجريدتها عام ١٨٧٦م، كذلك أنشأ المطبعة العمومية بالقاهرة عام ١٨٨٨م، وقد أكمل تعليمه بتأديته لامتحان المحاماة عام ١٨٩٠م، وأصبح محاميًا لدى المحاكم الأهلية، وأنشأ جريدة المحاكم. توفي عام ١٩٣٨م، بعد أن ترك وراءه مجموعة متميزة من الكتب التاريخية والقانونية.

قدَّمت الدولة العثمانية طوق النجاة للعالم الإسلامي؛ فقضت على الدولة البيزنطية وأسقطت عاصمتها القسطنطينية عام ١٤٥٣م، كما أنقذت مصر حينما ضَعُف المماليك، وكذلك تصدَّت للبرتغال حينما عاثوا فسادًا في البحر المتوسط مهدِّدين أمن الحجاز، واستمرَّ السلاطين العثمانيون في أداء دورهم إلى أن ألغى «كمال أتاتورك» الخلافة العثمانية وأعلن الجمهورية عام ١٩٢٤م. ويسلِّط «يوسف آصاف» في هذا الكتاب الضوء على تلك المرحلة التاريخية الهامة، وذلك من خلال استعراض أهمِّ أعمال هؤلاء السلاطين العثمانيين وإنجازاتهم التي قدَّموها للعالم الإسلامي، كما يتناول الأحداث التاريخية التي حدثت في عهد كل واحد منهم. ويقدِّم المؤلِّف علاوة على ذلك عدة قوائم تشتمل على أسماء سلاطين وبَشَوَات تلك الفترة لكلِّ من يريد الاطِّلاع عليها.
