شهدت العقود الأخيرة من عمر الدولة الأموية تراجعًا واضطرابات شديدة مهدت الطريق لقيام الدعوة العباسية. فقد أنهكت الخلافة الأموية سلسلة من الفتن والصراعات القبلية والسياسية، إلى جانب توقف الفتوحات واتساع رقعة الإمبراطورية بما فاق قدرتها على الضبط والإدارة. في هذا المناخ المتأزم، برزت الحركة العباسية كقوة معارضة منظمة تستثمر تذمر فئات واسعة من السكان، وخاصة في المشرق الإسلامي. وقد التف حول هذه الدعوة أطياف مختلفة توحدها نغمة مشتركة ضد الأمويين، من العرب المستبعدين من مناصب القيادة إلى الموالي الذين عانوا التمييز، وصولًا إلى بعض الشيعة الذين رأوا في شعارات العباسيين بريق أمل لتحقيق مطالب أهل البيت.
