يذكر بعض المؤرخين: أن ابن عباس قد سرق أموال البصرة، وذلك عندما كان والياً عليها من قبل ابن عمه علي بن أبي طالب "عليه السلام" ولقد أطال بعضهم في تفصيل هذه القضية وذكر ملايساتها ونصوص الكتب المتبادلة بين علي رضي الله عنه وأبي الأسود من جهة... ومن جهة ثانية: بين علي رضي الله عنه وابن عباس وهو في البصرة تارة... وفي مكة أخرى...
والهدف من هذا الكتيب هو نقل هذه القضية بعين النصوص التي جاءت في المصادر، من ثم تبيان افترائها وبطلانها لا تمتد بصلة إلى الواقع، بعد ذلك قام الباحث بتسجيل وجه نظرة في هذه القضية وهو يقول هنا: "إن هذه الرواية بتمامها من نسج الخيال، لأننا نجد من الدلائل والشواهد التاريخية ما يدل على أنها لا يمكن أن تصح".
