إن من بين أهم الدوافع وراء هذه الدراسات محاولة لربط الفكر بالواقع، وتغذية الواقع للفكر في ضوء ما يدور في مجتمعنا من أحداث وتطورات. والفكر التربوي في مجتمعنا العربي، على الرغم من الجهود التي بذلت في سبيل تنقيته وفاعليته، ما زال في حاجة إلى مزيد من النظر والتقليب والمراجعة، ليواجه في جرأة مطالبنا الحضارية والثقافية، وليحقق في ثقة حاجاتنا الاقتصادية والاجتماعية. وما زال النظر التربوي في كثير من آفاقه بالأفكار المتناقضة التي تجمعت نتيجة لقاء تيارات متعددة من الآثار "المتحفية" لتراثنا القديم، وأفكار غريبة لم تضرب بجذورها في تربة أوضاعنا الاجتماعية نتيجة الرغبة المظهرية في المحاكاة، أو نتيجة للفراغ الفكري، كما أنه يتسم في كثير من الحالات بالأفكار "المسطحة" التي لا نرى لها أبعاداً تجسدها أو حركة في الواقع الحي.
ومن هذا القبيل حداثة الربط بين القوى الحضارية في المجتمع والقوى التربوية فيه، واشتقاق النظر التربوي من التفاعل بين هذه القوى؛ فالتربية ظلت محصورة زمناً طويلاً في المدارس وبين جدرانها، وأفكارنا عن الدوافع السلوكية كانت ميتافيزيقية كأنما تتكون في فراغ، والحديث عن الفرد والمجتمع أخذ صورة مناظرة بين طرفين منفصلين، وكأنما الاهتمامات الفردية والتشكيل الاجتماعي جانبان متميزان. ونتحدث عن المواطن الصالح أو المستنيرعلى مستوى لفظي دون أن نحلل مقومات المواطنة ومكوناتها وواقعها وحركة تكوين الإنسان وتعديل سلوكه. كيف يتحرك الفكر التربوي مع حركة المجتمع، وكيف نواجه مشكلاتنا الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والثقافية بفكر فاعل دافع يضئ معالم الطريق؟ تلك هي محور هذه الدراسات التي يضمها هذا الكتاب.
